Academics
A primary mission of the Department is
to provide high quality instruction and mentoring for both undergraduate and
graduate students. Our academic program is set
up to meet instruction and mentoring requirements for both groups of these
students.
Undergraduate Students
The Entomology faculty members are partners in the College of Life
Sciences undergraduate Biological Sciences Program and teach many courses in this Program. Although our University
does not offer an undergraduate degree in entomology, undergraduates may take
a range of courses in insect science and insect pest management. The Department
is proud of the talented corps of undergraduates that pursue internships and
research projects in faculty research labs. They are often funded from sources
such as the College of Chemical and Life Sciences Howard Hughes program.
Qualified undergraduates may pursue thesis topics in the Entomology Honors program.
Graduate Students
The Department has an internationally recognized graduate program. Its M.S.
and Ph.D. graduates have competed exceptionally well in the job market. This
is apparent from the graduates’ success at landing positions with
universities,
government research and regulatory agencies, and industry. Graduate students
have options for pursuing a broad range of research topics. Ph.D. students
may pursue an entomology degree, or they may elect to participate in such
interdisciplinary programs as Behavior, Ecology, Evolution and Systematics, Marine and Estuarine Environmental Sciences, Molecular and Cell Biology, or Toxicology.
About one third of the present graduate students in the Department participate
in one of the interdisciplinary programs.
