POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: FACULTY RESEARCH ASSISTANT in Ornamental and Turf Entomology

Duration: 12 month, Contractual (full time)

Location: Department of Entomology, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and execution of applied research and extension demonstration projects related to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of pest insects with particular emphasis in biological control and ecology.
  • Assist in the development of materials for use in Extension educational programs, and research and extension publications; and coordinating training programs, conferences, and workshops for adult audiences
  • Supervise undergraduate student technicians and coordinate tasks relating to research and extension programs

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree required, M.S. preferred in Entomology, IPM, Horticulture, or related discipline.
  • Experience conducting research in the field, greenhouse, and/or laboratory related to entomology, horticulture, ecology, or IPM.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to utilize computer applications for data entry, statistical analysis, and graphical preparation of information for use in publications and educational materials.
  • Demonstrated skills in scientific / technical writing.
  • Experience working with people and evidence of effective human relations skills. Requires an assertive and motivated nature, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate ideas and requests.
  • Physical demands include working outside under a range of environmental conditions; lifting heavy research related materials; and performing strenuous research related tasks. Good vision and manual dexterity are necessary to work with small insects.
  • Mental demands include performing multiple, concurrent tasks, working independently, working under deadline pressure, and being highly organized.
  • Skills in taxonomic identification of arthropods is preferred.

Salary and Benefits:
Range $30,000 to $35,000 (commensurate with qualifications and experience); benefits eligible.
